Hi Gopalji, Sureshji, and Sumathyji

In the previous week I have interacted with you all; Thank you very much for the support and kind words.

MFG is doing a very laudable work in higlighting the plight of poor and deserving people, and is arranging sponsorships and support for them. Also MFG is conducting medical camps for poor people to provide guidence and affordable treatment.

Through these activites MFG has become a binding force amoung the members. Gopalji’s thought provoking mails add to the uniting force.

For the past few years I am pained to see the plight of kids, particularly of the nomads and poor people and wanted to make a difference to a few of them. I am particularly moved by congenital defects in kids. Cleft lip and Cleft Palette is a common congenital defect in kids throughout the world. In most cases, this is not a life threatening defect, but degrades life of the affected. I would like to bring to your attention the plight of such kids and if we can support free / very low cost surgeries for such kids.

Enough literature is available in the net about this defect, statistics about its prevalance, and the surgical remedy.

My son (1 year 4 months) is born with ‘Unilateral Cleft Lip and Cleft Palette’. We have already corrected this defect.

“Smile Pinky”, a documentary on ‘cleft lip and palette’ and the effect it had on the life of a 12 years old girl in Orisa, has won Oscar two year back.

These surgeries need skillful platstic surgens, very good hospital care, and parental support. Any significant surgical scar on the face affects the person concered. We can spread awareness amoung people about this condition, surgical remedies and the care needed, and provide facilities / suport for correction. With time, we can bring together a chain of plastic surgens and hospitals throughout india willing to help us in this cause. We can keep in touch with the people / families benefitted and can even ask them to contribute back, when they grow up and start earning, to help conduct more such surgeries in future.

Cost of such a surgery is about 12k – 15k depending on the hospital.

Since we are conducting medical camps for blind, we can support this cause also with minimal additional effort. But the help we provide will afford a dignified life to the affected kid and its family. Our impact is life long on the person concerned.

I am willing to sponsor one such surgeries per year.

May I have your thoughts on this area.

Regards
Anil Thomas
